I’m an avid fan of the “re-imagined” Battlestar Galactica. As may be evident from some of the other content on this site, I’m also a Mac user. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the recent release of a Mac demo for Beyond the Red Line, a free dogfight simulator under development for the Battlestar Galactica universe. It is pretty cool. The sound effects and voice acting are top notch, especially for a free production.

The prospect of piloting my very own Viper inspired me to dig out my old joystick, even though it has some broken buttons — including the all-important trigger. (I blame Cylon saboteurs.) At first I thought I was out of luck, as my ship would immediately spiral out of control, and the game offered no obvious way to calibrate the joystick. However, it turns out that simply flexing the joystick through its full range of motion automatically brings it into calibration. A good tactic to keep in mind if you ever find your ship similarly disabled.
